Anti Cable Theft protection and surveillance measures

Cable Theft Surveillance & Prevention

Stolen copper cable cut from railways stacked ready to remove by the thieves who cut it

Increasing copper prices have seen a dramatic rise in the theft of the metal including more unusual items being stolen, such as plaques at crematoria, door knockers, metal from roofs and railway cables.

According to the British Transport Police (BTP) in the last three years, cable theft has cost the rail industry £43million, delaying trains for a total of more than 16,000 hours.

The police are failing to keep up with the surging level of copper being stolen which has rocketed following rises in the cost of the metal on world markets, a senior officer has said. Metal theft is estimated to cost Britain around £800 million a year, with the majority of stolen items believed to find their way to the Far East. Net imports of copper scrap in China rose 9.1 per cent in the first seven months of this year, compared to the same period last year, according to the Financial Times. It's not just copper that is becoming the victim of theft, the prices of lead and bronze have seen similar rises meaning they are increasing sought after by thieves looking to make money.
